Jacob’s Ladder White is an elegant perennial flower producing delicate snow-white blooms in graceful clusters above attractive fern-like foliage. Also known as Polemonium caeruleum, this charming plant brings a soft, refined look to flower beds, cottage gardens, mixed borders and pollinator-friendly planting schemes.

Growing to around 60–70 cm tall, Jacob’s Ladder is ideal for the middle of borders, where its upright stems and light flowers add structure, movement and gentle garden elegance.

Sow seeds under cover from April to May in light, well-drained seed compost. Cover with approximately 1 cm of soil and keep the compost evenly moist during germination.

Plant young plants outside from August to September, allowing them to establish before winter. Choose a sunny or partially shaded position with well-drained soil.

Growing Tips

Water regularly during dry periods, especially while plants are young and settling in. Feed moderately, preferably with compost or organic fertiliser. Avoid waterlogged soil, as overly wet conditions may encourage fungal problems.

Remove faded flower stems to keep plants tidy and encourage a longer flowering display. Jacob’s Ladder is generally hardy, but young plants may benefit from protection in very harsh winter conditions.

Jacob’s Ladder White pairs beautifully with peonies, asters, lilies, foxgloves, aquilegia and other cottage garden perennials. Its soft white flowers also work well with blue, purple and pastel planting schemes.
