Caucasian Scabious Blue Seeds

Caucasian Scabious Blue is an elegant perennial flower producing beautiful blue, pincushion-like blooms on upright, branching stems. Also known as Scabiosa caucasica, this graceful variety is perfect for cutting gardens, pollinator-friendly borders, gravel gardens and natural-style planting.

With its long flowering period from July to September, Caucasian Scabious brings soft blue colour, height and movement to the garden. The nectar-rich flowers are loved by butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.

Sow seeds under cover in moist, well-drained seed compost and cover lightly with soil. Avoid sowing too thickly, as overcrowded seedlings can become weak. Keep the compost moderately moist while the seeds germinate.

Plant young plants outside in September, allowing them time to establish before winter. Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid heavy, waterlogged ground, especially during winter.

Growing Tips

Water regularly during dry periods, especially while plants are establishing. Remove faded flowers to encourage a longer blooming period and keep the plants looking tidy. Caucasian Scabious prefers free-draining soil and does not need overly rich feeding, as too much fertiliser can encourage soft growth.

Good Companion Plants

Caucasian Scabious pairs beautifully with other sun-loving plants such as lavender, sage, catmint, Rudbeckia and Echinacea. These combinations work especially well in pollinator-friendly borders, cottage gardens and gravel-style planting schemes.
