Overview

Single White Gypsophila, commonly known as Baby’s Breath, is a graceful perennial that produces clouds of delicate white flowers above fine, branching stems. Growing to approximately 90 cm tall, it adds a light, airy texture to sunny borders and cottage-style planting schemes.

Gypsophila paniculata is especially valued as a cut flower. Its long, branching stems complement roses and other larger blooms in bouquets, wedding arrangements and floral displays. The flowers also retain their delicate appearance when dried.

Sowing Instructions

Sow outdoors from May until the end of July in a prepared seedbed or directly where the plants are intended to flower. Sow the seeds thinly and cover with a light layer of fine soil. Keep the seedbed evenly moist during germination.

Thin the seedlings once they are large enough to handle, leaving the strongest plants approximately 40–50 cm apart. If sown in a separate seedbed, transplant the young plants carefully into their permanent positions before they become too large.

Growing Conditions and Care

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with light, fertile and very well-drained soil. Gypsophila performs particularly well in neutral to alkaline ground and may benefit from the addition of garden lime where the soil is naturally acidic.

Avoid heavy, wet or waterlogged ground, especially during winter. Water young plants regularly during establishment, but mature plants prefer relatively dry conditions. Taller flowering stems may benefit from discreet support in exposed gardens.

Cut back faded stems after flowering to maintain a neat appearance. As Gypsophila develops a deep taproot, choose its permanent growing position carefully and avoid unnecessary disturbance once established.

Flowering and Garden Use

Established plants generally flower from June to August, producing branching sprays covered with small white blooms. Plants grown from seed may establish foliage during their first season and produce their fullest display from the following year.

For fresh arrangements, cut the stems when approximately half of the small flowers have opened. Place them into water immediately after cutting.

For dried arrangements, cut the stems when most of the flowers are open and hang them upside down in small bunches in a dry, shaded and well-ventilated location.
