Sowing & Growing Information

Sow Valerian seeds directly outdoors from May to June or August to September. Seeds can also be started under cover during May and June. Sow thinly on the soil surface and lightly cover with approximately 0.5 cm of fine soil or compost.

Transplant young plants to their final position in August or September, allowing sufficient time to establish before winter. Keep the soil evenly moist during dry periods and remove weeds regularly while plants are becoming established.

Valerian grows best in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded position. Avoid waterlogged ground, as excessive moisture may affect healthy root development.

Flowering

Valerian flowers from early to mid-summer, producing elegant clusters of small, fragrant white to pale pink blooms that are highly attractive to pollinating insects.
