Overview

Wild Creeping Thyme, botanically known as Thymus serpyllum, is a hardy, mat-forming perennial with aromatic evergreen foliage and abundant purple-red summer flowers. Growing to approximately 10 cm tall, it gradually forms a colourful carpet across sunny, well-drained areas.

This low-maintenance perennial is particularly effective in rock gardens, gravel gardens, border edges, containers and between paving stones in areas with light foot traffic. Its nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects.

Sowing Instructions

Sow outdoors from mid-May to mid-July in a prepared seedbed. Sow the fine seeds thinly on the surface and cover with only a very light layer of fine soil or sand. Keep the seedbed evenly moist while germination takes place.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out or thin them to prevent overcrowding. Transplant the young plants into their permanent positions during October or November, spacing them approximately 20–25 cm apart.

Growing Conditions and Care

Choose a warm position in full sun with light, sandy and sharply drained soil. Wild thyme performs especially well in neutral to alkaline ground, and adding garden lime may be beneficial where the soil is naturally acidic.

Avoid heavy, wet or waterlogged conditions, particularly during winter. Water young plants regularly while they establish, but mature plants generally tolerate dry conditions well.

Lightly trim the plants after flowering to remove faded blooms and maintain dense, compact growth. Avoid cutting deeply into old woody stems.

Flowering and Garden Use

Established plants generally flower from June to August, producing a dense display of vivid purple-red blooms above aromatic foliage. Plants grown from seed may concentrate on establishing foliage during their first season and flower more fully from the following year.

Plant Wild Creeping Thyme along pathways, at the front of sunny borders, over retaining walls or among rocks and gravel. Its compact habit also makes it suitable for troughs, alpine containers and pollinator-friendly planting schemes.
