Overview

Nepeta Catmint is a hardy, compact perennial valued for its aromatic foliage and masses of purple-blue flowers. Growing to approximately 30 cm tall, it forms spreading clumps that work beautifully along border edges, beside paths, in wildlife gardens and as informal ground cover.

The fragrant flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. Cats may also be drawn to the aromatic foliage and sometimes enjoy rubbing against or resting among the plants, although individual cats respond differently.

Sowing Instructions

Sow outdoors from May to July in a prepared seedbed. Sow the seeds thinly on the surface and cover with a very light layer of fine soil. Keep the seedbed evenly moist while germination takes place.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin or prick them out to prevent overcrowding. Transplant the young plants into their permanent flowering positions during October or November, spacing them approximately 25–30 cm apart.

Growing Conditions and Care

Plant Nepeta in full sun or light partial shade and in reasonably well-drained soil. Once established, the plants are low maintenance and tolerate occasional dry conditions well.

Water young plants regularly during establishment. After the first flush of flowers, lightly trim the plants to remove faded blooms and encourage fresh foliage with the possibility of further flowering later in the season.

Avoid excessively rich soil or heavy feeding, as this can produce soft, open growth. Divide established clumps every few years if they become overcrowded.

Flowering and Garden Use

Established plants flower from approximately May to August, producing spikes of small purple-blue blooms above fragrant foliage. Plants grown from seed may establish foliage during their first season and flower more fully from the following year.

Use Nepeta as an informal edging plant, in perennial borders, wildlife gardens, gravel gardens or in large groups as aromatic ground cover. Its long flowering period makes it particularly useful for creating pollinator-friendly planting schemes.
