Buzzy Cardiospermum Bubble Vine, also known as Bladder Vine or Love in a Bag, is a fast-growing annual climber with delicate foliage, small flowers and unusual balloon-like seed pods. The decorative fruits look like little green bubbles, making this an eye-catching choice for fences, trellis, pergolas and bare walls.

This charming climber can reach up to around 250–300 cm, quickly adding height, greenery and interest to the garden. The seeds are also known as “Valentine’s Bean” because of their distinctive dark colour with a small pale heart-like marking.

Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours before sowing. Sow under glass from February to March in moist seed compost and keep warm during germination.

Transplant young plants in May once the weather has warmed and frost risk has passed. Provide support such as a trellis, fence or climbing frame, as Bubble Vine grows quickly and naturally climbs upwards.

Growing Tips

Choose a warm, sheltered position for the best growth. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while plants are establishing. Guide young stems onto their support early to help them climb neatly.

The decorative balloon-like fruits appear after flowering and add extra interest to the plant later in the season.
