Growing Information
When to Sow
- Indoors: February – April
- Direct Outdoors: April – June or September
How to Sow
Soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing to help improve germination. Sow into moist seed compost or directly into prepared soil, covering seeds with approximately 1 cm of compost or fine soil. Keep evenly moist until germination.
Planting Out
Plant young seedlings into a sunny or lightly shaded position after the risk of frost has passed. Space plants approximately 40–50 cm apart to allow room for their mature size.
Flowering
Produces spectacular flower spikes from May to July, with plants often flowering more heavily in their second year. Removing spent flowers may encourage a smaller second flush later in the season.
Growing Tips
- Grow in full sun or light partial shade.
- Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
- Avoid disturbing established plants, as lupins develop long taproots.
- Stake taller flower spikes in exposed gardens if required.
- Deadhead spent blooms to encourage additional flowering and prevent unwanted self-seeding.
