Growing Information
When to Sow
- Indoors: April – May
- Direct Outdoors: May – June (after the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed)
How to Sow
Sow seeds individually in small pots about 2–3 cm deep using moist seed compost. Keep at 18–22°C until germination. Harden off young plants before transplanting outdoors.
For direct sowing, plant seeds into warm, well-prepared soil after the last frost.
Planting Out
Plant in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants approximately 90–120 cm apart to allow plenty of room for growth.
Harvesting
Harvest from August to October, once the fruits have developed a hard rind and turned a rich golden-yellow colour. Leave a short section of stem attached to improve storage life.
Growing Tips
- Grow in full sun for the highest yields.
- Water regularly, especially while fruits are developing.
- Feed with a high-potash fertiliser once flowering begins.
- Harvest before the first autumn frost.
- Store mature fruits in a cool, dry place for several weeks or even months.
Culinary Uses
Bake or roast whole or halved fruits until tender, then scrape the flesh with a fork to create natural spaghetti-like strands. Delicious served with tomato sauces, pesto, roasted vegetables, cheese or herbs.
