Overview

Yarrow, botanically known as Achillea millefolium, is a hardy perennial wildflower with delicate, feathery foliage and flat clusters of small white flowers. Reaching approximately 85 cm tall, it creates a soft, natural appearance in herb gardens, wildlife areas, cottage-style borders and meadow planting.

This reliable perennial returns year after year and flowers from summer into early autumn. Its nectar-rich blooms are particularly valuable in pollinator-friendly gardens, attracting bees and other beneficial insects.

Sowing Instructions

Sow directly outdoors from April to June in a prepared seedbed or in rows where the plants are intended to grow. Sow the seeds thinly and cover with only a very light layer of fine soil. Keep the seedbed evenly moist while germination takes place.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out and transplant to their permanent position. Alternatively, thin directly sown seedlings to approximately 35 cm apart to give each plant sufficient room to develop.

Growing Conditions and Care

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with reasonably well-drained soil. Yarrow is an adaptable, low-maintenance perennial once established and performs particularly well in informal borders, wildlife gardens and meadow-style planting.

Water young plants regularly during establishment. Mature plants generally require less frequent watering. Removing faded flower heads can help maintain a neat appearance and may encourage an extended flowering period.

Flowering and Garden Use

Plants generally flower from July to September, producing white flower clusters above aromatic, fern-like foliage. The flowers add useful structure to naturalistic planting and provide a valuable food source for garden pollinators.

Flowering stems may also be cut before the blooms begin to fade and dried in a shaded, well-ventilated place. Avoid cutting the plant too close to ground level so that healthy basal growth remains.
