Russian Tarragon Seeds 0.2g

Overview

Russian Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) is a vigorous perennial culinary herb producing slender, aromatic leaves with a mild aniseed flavour. The leaves can be used fresh or dried to season salads, soups, sauces, pickles, herb vinegars and a wide range of savoury dishes.

This hardy, seed-grown tarragon is generally more robust and easier to establish than French Tarragon. Its upright growth makes it suitable for herb gardens, raised beds and large containers.

Key Features

  • Hardy perennial culinary herb.
  • Vigorous and reliable variety that is easy to grow from seed.
  • Produces aromatic leaves with a mild aniseed flavour.
  • Leaves may be harvested and used fresh or dried.
  • Suitable for salads, soups, sauces, pickles and herb vinegars.
  • Grows well in herb gardens, raised beds and large containers.
  • A useful addition to a home collection of perennial herb seeds.

Sowing Instructions

  • Sow indoors in seed trays or small pots during March and April.
  • Alternatively, sow outdoors in a prepared seedbed from April to June.
  • Sow thinly on moist seed compost and cover lightly with fine compost.
  • Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Prick out indoor-grown seedlings once they are large enough to handle.
  • Thin or transplant outdoor seedlings to their final positions when they are well established.
  • Allow approximately 40–50cm between plants.

Growing Conditions and Care

Choose a warm position in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Russian Tarragon is hardy once established but dislikes persistently wet ground, particularly during winter.

Water young plants regularly while their root systems develop. Established plants generally need watering only during prolonged dry periods. Avoid excessive feeding, as overly rich conditions may reduce the intensity of the leaves’ flavour.

Cut back old stems in late autumn or early spring. Mature plants can be divided every few years to maintain healthy, vigorous growth.

Harvesting and Use

Begin harvesting leaves once the plants are well established. Pick young leaves and shoot tips regularly from spring through autumn to encourage fresh growth.

Use the leaves fresh in salads, dressings, sauces, egg dishes, chicken, fish and soups. Tarragon is also traditionally used to flavour pickles and homemade herb vinegar.

For later use, harvest leafy stems before flowering and dry them in a warm, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Store the dried leaves in an airtight container.
