Plant Details

Plant type: Perennial flower
Height: Approx. 80–100 cm
Flowering period: July to September
Plant spacing: 40 x 50 cm
Best use: Tall borders, flower beds, pond-side planting, cut flowers and pollinator-friendly gardens

Growing Information

Sow Tritoma seeds under cover in spring, using well-prepared, moist seed compost. The seeds need light to help with germination, so keep the surface bright and avoid covering too heavily.

Plant at a depth of approximately 1.5 cm and keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Overwatering should be avoided, as this may cause seeds to rot.

Young plants can be planted outdoors in July to August, giving them time to establish before winter. Space plants around 40 x 50 cm apart to allow room for their tall flower spikes to develop.

Tritoma grows best in a sunny position with well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic fertiliser. Water during dry periods and remove faded flower spikes to encourage fresh growth.

Why You’ll Love It

Tritoma is a dramatic and low-maintenance perennial that brings bold colour and structure to the garden. Its tall, torch-like flower spikes make it a standout feature in borders, while the bright blooms attract butterflies and other pollinators.

It pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, lavender, sage and other sun-loving perennials, creating a natural yet vibrant garden display.

Tritoma is also a good choice for cut flowers, adding unusual shape and strong summer colour to floral arrangements.
