Brussels Sprouts Groninger Seeds 2g
Overview
Brussels Sprouts Groninger is a traditional open-pollinated variety valued for its reliable growth and steady production of tightly formed, medium-sized green sprouts. It is a medium-early variety that performs particularly well in fertile, moisture-retentive, medium-to-heavy soil.
The plants produce sprouts gradually from the bottom of the sturdy stems upwards, providing an extended harvest through autumn and into winter. Their flavour becomes milder and sweeter after exposure to light frost, making Groninger an excellent choice for winter meals and Christmas harvesting.

Growing Conditions and Care
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with fertile, firm and moisture-retentive soil. Groninger is particularly well suited to medium-to-heavy ground but requires good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
Prepare the growing area in advance by incorporating well-rotted compost or manure. Brussels sprouts need firm soil for stable growth, so avoid planting into freshly dug, loose ground.
Water regularly during dry periods and apply an organic mulch to retain moisture. Firm the soil around the base of each plant as it grows and provide support in exposed or windy gardens.
Protect young plants from slugs, snails, pigeons, cabbage root fly and caterpillars. Remove yellowing lower leaves as the sprouts develop to improve airflow and keep the crop healthy.
Harvesting and Use
Harvest the lowest sprouts first when they are firm, tightly closed and approximately 2.5–5cm in diameter. Continue picking upwards along the stem as the remaining sprouts mature.
Groninger provides a steady harvest through autumn and into winter. Allowing the crop to experience a few light frosts can improve its sweetness and overall flavour.
Use freshly harvested Brussels sprouts for steaming, roasting, boiling or sautéing. They are also excellent in gratins, casseroles, stir-fries and other seasonal vegetable dishes.
