Peppermint leaves are best harvested in dry weather before the plant begins to flower, when the aroma and flavour are at their strongest.

Growing Information

Sow Peppermint seeds in a greenhouse or under cover in March to raise seedlings. Do not cover the seeds with soil, as they need light to germinate. Press the seeds gently onto the surface of moist seed compost and keep them warm and evenly moist.

Plant seedlings outdoors in May to June, once they are strong enough and conditions are mild. Peppermint grows well in a sunny or partially shaded position with moist, fertile soil.

Peppermint can spread strongly in the garden, so growing it in a container or separate herb bed can help keep it under control.

Why You’ll Love It

Peppermint is a useful and aromatic herb for any garden. The leaves can be harvested for refreshing homemade tea, used fresh in drinks, or added to cooking and desserts.

It is also a lovely plant for container growing, making it suitable for patios, balconies and small gardens.
